Taliban deputy foreign minister urges reopening of girls’ high schools

Canada Global (Web News) Taliban’s acting deputy foreign minister, Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, has urged the group’s leadership to reopen schools for Afghan girls, calling the ongoing restrictions unjust and contrary to Islamic teachings.

Speaking over the weekend, Stanekzai emphasized that education was accessible to both men and women during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He argued that denying education to Afghanistan’s female population, nearly half of the country’s 40 million people, was a significant injustice.

His remarks mark one of the strongest public criticisms from within the Taliban regarding the school closures, which were reportedly enforced by the group’s supreme leader, Haibatullah Akhundzada, despite internal disagreements.

The Taliban initially promised to reopen girls’ high schools in 2022 but later reversed their decision and also barred women from universities by the year’s end. They claim to uphold women’s rights under Islamic law and Afghan traditions but have provided no timeline for reopening educational institutions for females.

International criticism has been widespread, with Islamic scholars and Western diplomats stating that the Taliban’s stance on women’s education remains a major obstacle to their recognition on the global stage.

Taliban officials in Kandahar, where Akhundzada is based, have not responded to Stanekzai’s remarks.

Hate crimes in Alberta on the rise: OPV study

Canada Global (Web News) A recent report indicates that Alberta is experiencing an increase in hate crimes.

In a government-funded research conducted by the Organisation for the Prevention of Violence (OPV), it was discovered that more than one-third of Albertans had been the victim of a hate crime in the previous three years. But the study indicated that visible minorities are much more likely to experience hatred.

Compared to the criminal statute, the survey’s definition of hate was more expansive. The study focused on incidents that did not need reporting to the police or being investigated as a hate crime.

Since things like racial slurs frequently aren’t dealt with on a criminal level, this allowed OPV to gather a far more comprehensive depiction of hate in the province, according to Michele St. Amant from OPV.

“In our broad survey, we discovered that almost a third of Albertans had encountered any form of hate incident or experience, but that number rises significantly when we take a closer look at visible minorities. Therefore, approximately 50% of visible minorities in our representative survey report having encountered hate, and we also discovered that visible minorities are most likely to face violent incidents of hate, according to St. Amant.

According to St-Amant, education in schools and workplaces as well as improved translation services for reporting crimes, as proposed by survey respondents, are the keys to reducing hate crimes.

According to Stats Canada, Alberta has experienced the fourth-highest rate of increases in hate crimes from the prior year.

Muslim groups promise to monitor Quebec ban on school prayer spaces

Canada Global (Web News) Muslim organisations are protesting the Quebec government’s plan to outlaw prayer rooms in public schools and pledging to keep an eye on how the Education Department applies its new regulations.

Education Minister Bernard Drainville pledged last week to forbid schools from doing so in response to news that at least two schools in the Montreal region had designated areas for Muslim students to pray. But the minister assured reporters that he wouldn’t outright forbid prayer. Instead, he advised pupils to pray “discreetly” and “quietly.”

The National Council of Canadian Muslims announced on Monday that it would monitor how the government implemented the ban on prayer rooms and that it would “take action” if the rights of students were infringed.

According to the council’s chief executive officer, Stephen Brown, “we haven’t actually seen how it is going to materially impact individuals.” Hence, “we would do something, we would take action, (if) these guidelines would actually constitute in effect a limitation on people’s fundamental rights.”

When asked if Drainville’s order had been followed, the Education Department remained silent on Monday.

Throughout the course of the previous week’s 24 hours, Drainville’s stance hardened. He stated that schools could not favour one religion over another and that they had to make sure the spaces supported gender equality in his first response to news of school prayer areas. But as the Parti Québécois demanded tougher action, he immediately altered his mind, claiming Drainville’s initial accommodative posture would encourage additional schools to open up prayer rooms.

When the PQ was in power in 2013, Drainville is renowned for introducing a purported values charter. Those who wear religious symbols should not be allowed to work in public institutions, according to the charter. The charter served as a model for Bill 21, a secularism bill introduced by the Coalition Avenir Québec in 2019 that forbids many public employees, including teachers, from donning religious garb at work. Before the elections in 2022, the minister switched to the CAQ.

According to civil rights attorney Julius Grey, Quebec schools are not required to provide prayer rooms under Bill 21. Yet if the government outright forbids students from praying, it might find itself in legal difficulties.

“A bar on people praying in schools would be utterly opposed to the Charter — and I think will get struck down,” Grey said in an interview on Monday. They won’t, in my opinion; to do so would be to invite difficulty.

The minister should have consulted community leaders before banning school prayer areas, according to the Table de concertation des organismes musulmans, a coalition of Muslim groups and mosques that condemned Drainville’s decision last week.

Hassan Guillet, a Montreal imam, called the issue a “tempest in a teacup,” claiming that politicians and media outlets had implied that Muslim pupils praying in class was somehow sinister. According to him, Ramadan sees an increase in the number of Muslims who pray five times daily.

Israeli police attack worshippers in Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa, Gaza launches rockets at Israel

Canada Global (Web News) Several worshippers were reportedly attacked by Israeli police on Wednesday morning before dawn in the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, according to witnesses. According to Israeli authorities, the attacks were a response to disturbances.

In response to sirens sounding in southern cities, the incident provoked demonstrations throughout the occupied West Bank, and the Israeli military said that nine rockets were fired from Gaza at Israel.

Since last year, there has been an increase in violence in the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem, and this month, when the Jewish holiday of Passover and the Christian holiday of Easter overlap, Ramadan, there is danger that tensions may rise even more.

According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, seven Palestinians were hurt during altercations with Israeli police in the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound by beatings and rubber-tipped bullets. It said that its medics couldn’t get to the mosque because of Israeli soldiers.

An elderly woman, gasping for air outside the mosque, told Reuters, “I was seated on a chair reciting (the Qur’an).” She cried out, “They threw stun grenades, one of them hit my chest.”
In a statement, Israeli police said that they were compelled to enter the property because masked agitators had barricaded themselves inside the mosque with pyrotechnics, sticks, and stones.

According to the Israeli military, nine rockets were fired from Gaza towards Israel, at least four of which were intercepted, while the remaining four reportedly fell in open spaces.

Pakistan condemns incidents of Holy Quran’s desecration in Al-Aqsa Mosque, Holland

Canada Global (Web News) On Monday, Pakistan strongly denounced the events of the Holy Quran’s destruction in Holland and during the Israeli military’s attack on Mosque Al-Aqsa.

According to the foreign office’s statement, it was highly condemnable to kick pilgrims out of Al-Aqsa Mosque during the holy month and violate the mosque’s sanctity.

Their measures blatantly violated the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people, including their right to freedom of religion. The international community should stop Israeli aggression.

According to a foreign office spokeswoman, Pakistan vehemently rejects yet another horrific sacrilege of the Holy Quran in the Netherlands. Racism, inhumanity, and Islamophobia were the causes of these vile acts. The frequency of these instances raises concerns about these regimes’ legal systems.

Pakistan, according to the foreign ministry, considers that having a voice carries responsibilities. Governments and the international community have a duty to put an end to such atrocious crimes that incite violence and religious hatred.

Pakistanis face price hikes in Ramazan

Canada Global (Web News) As Ramazan got underway on Thursday, commercial activity in the country’s largest date market flared up, with prices of some types rising by 50% compared to last year. Pakistanis felt the brunt of this soaring inflation.

Nestled among skyscrapers in Karachi’s ancient Lyari district, the century-old market comes to life during the holy fasting month, when dates are consumed before the fast starts in the morning and to break it after the sun sets.

But date prices are much higher this year as the inflation rate in Pakistan soared to a 50-year high, or 31.5 percent, last month.

“Everything has become pricey, and date prices have also increased,” businessman Muhammad Ishaq told, while he was shopping at the market.

“What I bought for Rs350 ($1.24) last year is now being marketed for Rs500 ($1.77) per kilogramme.”

The price increase has decreased sales of the fruit compared to 2022, according to vendors, who also blamed import restrictions and the damage of local crops during Pakistan’s severe floods from June to October.

Customers are buying a 20kg flour bag between Rs1,295-3,100 in various parts of the nation against Rs800-1,500 per bag price previous Ramazan. The price of five- and ten-kg branded fine flour bags has increased by 80–90% in the past year to Rs820–870 and Rs1,600, respectively.

One kg ghee packet of Dalda has surged to Rs570-638 from Rs399-484, while five-litre Dalda cooking oil prices has shot up to Rs3,000-3,510 from Rs2,060-2,485. Yet, many stores charge Rs650–670 for branded ghee and cooking oil.

As opposed to Rs90-150 one year ago, fresh milk prices in various cities currently range between Rs120-210 per litre. The cost of a kg of live poultry varies from Rs360 to Rs550 as opposed to Rs240 to Rs350.
