  • The World Bank Has Approved A Loan Of 1 Billion Dollars For Pakistan

The World Bank Has Approved A Loan Of 1 Billion Dollars For Pakistan

This financing marks a major boost for Pakistan’s clean energy ambitions, as the country continues to grapple with energy shortages, rising fuel import bills, and the effects of climate change.

The Project: Dasu Hydropower – A Game Changer

The funding is specifically designated for Stage I of the Dasu Hydropower Project, a mega initiative located on the Indus River near Dasu in the Kohistan District. Stage I of the project will generate 2,160 megawatts (MW) of electricity and is expected to produce over 12,000 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean, renewable energy annually.

The long-term vision includes a Stage II expansion, which could double the capacity to between 4,320 and 5,400 MW, making it one of the largest hydropower projects in South Asia.

Najy Benhassine, the World Bank Country Director for Pakistan, described the site as “one of the best hydropower locations in the world” and emphasized its potential to transform the country’s energy sector.

“This project is a game changer. It will not only help provide low-cost electricity but will also contribute to greening the energy mix and reducing Pakistan’s carbon footprint,” he said.

    Loan Breakdown and Structure

The $1 billion package is a combination of different financial instruments:

    • $435 million – IDA Shorter Maturity Loan

    • $365 million – Regular IDA Scale-Up Window Credit

    • $200 million – IBRD Loan

The funding will also support infrastructure development, local community services, and the strengthening of the Water and Power Development Authority’s (WAPDA) institutional capacity for future hydropower projects.

    Economic and Environmental Impact

Pakistan’s energy sector has long struggled with inefficiency, frequent power outages, and a heavy reliance on imported fossil fuels. The Dasu Hydropower Project is expected to save the country an estimated $1.8 billion per year in fuel imports and offset nearly 5 million tons of carbon emissions annually.

In addition to environmental benefits, the project boasts a strong economic case, with an estimated economic return rate of 28%.

The project is already under construction, with Stage I scheduled for completion in 2027. It is also expected to create thousands of jobs, improve regional infrastructure, and provide socio-economic benefits to communities in the surrounding areas.

    Global Support for Sustainable Development

This approval comes at a time when international financial institutions are ramping up support for clean energy projects in developing nations. The World Bank has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to helping countries transition to low-carbon energy sources and build climate resilience.

For Pakistan, which faces rising energy demands from a growing population and economy, the Dasu project could be a cornerstone of its sustainable development strategy.

    Looking Ahead

As Pakistan moves forward with this ambitious hydropower project, all eyes will be on the effective implementation of the loan and the on-time completion of construction milestones. If successful, the Dasu Hydropower Project could serve as a model for future green energy initiatives in the region.

The World Bank’s financial backing reaffirms global confidence in Pakistan’s renewable energy potential and could pave the way for further investments in sustainable infrastructure.

Seven passengers offloaded, shot dead in Barkhan

Canada Global (Web News) At least seven passengers lost their lives in a deadly attack in Balochistan’s Barkhan district late Tuesday night, as confirmed by Barkhan Assistant Commissioner (AC) on Wednesday morning.

The incident occurred along the National Highway in the Rarkan area, where unidentified gunmen intercepted a passenger bus and fired warning shots into the air, according to AC Khadim Hussain.

The assailants then boarded the bus, checked passengers’ identification cards, and forcibly removed seven individuals, taking them to a nearby mountainous area. Soon after, gunfire was heard.

Upon arrival, local law enforcement, including the Levies force, found the bodies of the abducted passengers. The deceased have been transported to a hospital in Rakni, authorities reported, confirming that they were residents of different cities in Punjab.

The bus service office revealed that the vehicle, carrying at least 45 passengers, was traveling from Quetta to Faisalabad.

Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti strongly condemned the brutal killings, labeling the attack as “heinous and despicable” while assuring that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.

  • IFC chief says $2bn annual investment in Pakistan not rigid target

IFC chief says $2bn annual investment in Pakistan not rigid target

Canada Global (Web News) Following key meetings with Finance Division officials, International Finance Corporation (IFC) chief Makhtar Diop stated on Thursday that a $2 billion annual investment is feasible for Pakistan, given its pressing infrastructure needs in airports, energy, water, and ports.

Diop’s visit, his first to Pakistan, comes as part of the World Bank’s broader plan to allocate up to $20 billion for the country under the Country Partnership Framework (CPF) announced in January, with IFC set to contribute the same amount.

In an exclusive interview with Reuters, Diop expressed optimism about progress on major transactions by October, signaling Pakistan’s readiness for large-scale financing in critical infrastructure.

Pakistan, currently navigating economic recovery under a $7 billion IMF bailout program, urgently requires external funding for development projects. The country’s foreign exchange reserves remain insufficient to cover even a month’s worth of controlled imports.

During the fiscal year 2024, IFC had an investment exposure of $2.1 billion in Pakistan—its highest yet in the country’s $350 billion economy, which saw minimal growth of 0.92% in the first quarter. Diop highlighted IFC’s interest in agriculture, infrastructure, financial services, and the digital sector.

The government is pushing for privatization to generate revenue, but efforts to privatize Pakistan International Airlines and outsource Islamabad’s airport have faced challenges.

Diop noted that while debt financing remains crucial, equity-based transactions will also play a greater role in Pakistan, reflecting IFC’s long-term commitment to the country.

Earlier, Diop and his delegation met with Finance Division officials to discuss strategies for industry-driven growth, particularly through export expansion. During a high-level meeting at the Ministry of Finance, he reaffirmed IFC’s commitment to supporting Pakistan in areas such as green energy, data centers, agriculture, telecom, and digitization.

Finance Minister Mohammad Aurangzeb and his team were also present at the meeting, where Diop praised Pakistan’s CPF agreement with the World Bank, calling it a model for global best practices.

Dr. Syed Tauqeer Hussain Shah, Executive Director (Pakistan) at the World Bank Group, described the recently approved $40 billion CPF as a strong vote of confidence in Pakistan’s economic reforms. He emphasized that IFC has a robust investment pipeline for the country, though continued economic and political stability will be key to sustaining investor confidence.

Karachi traffic accidents claim 108 lives in 45 days

Canada Global (Web News) Traffic accidents in Karachi have escalated in 2025, resulting in 108 fatalities—72 in urban areas and 24 in the suburbs. The rise in dumper truck-related crashes has further worsened the situation.

A freight train collided with a trailer near Mai Kolachi, followed by an oil tanker crashing into them. The oil tanker’s front portion was crushed, trapping its driver inside. After intensive rescue efforts, the driver was successfully freed.

Authorities confirmed the accident occurred at an unmanned railway track. Traffic on Mai Kolachi Road was severely affected, with diversions in place from MT Khan Road to PIDC and Boat Basin towards Bilawal Chowrangi.

Meanwhile, a separate accident in Malir’s Memon Goth claimed one life. Initial reports suggested a dumper was involved, but investigations found no evidence. The deceased’s identity remains unknown.

In response, Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced measures to improve road safety. The Sindh government has mandated fitness and registration for all heavy vehicles, barring those without valid fitness certificates.

Additionally, the water board has introduced a barcode system for registered water tankers to ensure compliance with safety standards. Unregistered vehicles will be seized, and previously registered ones will be reassessed.

A 30-day deadline has been set for heavy traffic vehicles to obtain fitness certification. Furthermore, the operational hours for dumper trucks in Karachi have been revised, now restricted to 10pm-6am instead of 11pm-6pm.

Speaking on news channel, Memon emphasized shared responsibility for road safety, attributing accidents to reckless driving, traffic violations, and enforcement gaps.

He clarified that vehicle fitness regulations are longstanding and that the government plans to outsource the transport department to improve oversight.

Journalists protest against PECA law for second day

Canada Global (Web News) Protests against the Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Act (PECA) 2025, led by the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), continued for a second day on Thursday.

Journalists have challenged the law in the Supreme Court and multiple high courts, arguing that it undermines media freedom and violates constitutional rights.

In a petition filed at the Islamabad High Court, the PFUJ called PECA unconstitutional and demanded a judicial review to overturn the amendments.

Hunger strike camps and demonstrations were held nationwide, with journalists condemning the law as an attempt to suppress freedom of expression.

In Quetta, the Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ) staged a symbolic hunger strike outside the Quetta Press Club, vowing to resist the law. The Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) also launched a hunger strike at the Karachi Press Club, which entered its second day.

Representatives from human rights organizations, lawyers, and civil society joined the KUJ’s protest, which runs daily from 11 AM to 5 PM. The KUJ labeled PECA a “black law” and urged journalists to continue demonstrations until it is repealed.

In Rawalpindi and Islamabad, the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ)’s Talagang-Chakwal Unit organized protests and hunger strikes, with participants raising slogans against the law.

The amendments to PECA were swiftly passed by the ruling coalition in both the National Assembly and Senate without proper consultation with opposition parties, journalists, or media organizations.

Signed into effect by President Asif Ali Zardari, the revised law introduces new definitions, regulatory bodies, and stricter penalties for so-called “false” information. It also reduces the punishment for spreading “fake news” online to three years in prison and a fine of up to Rs 2 million.

The amendments establish the Social Media Protection and Regulatory Authority (SMPRA), the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), and the Social Media Protection Tribunal, increasing government control over online content.

Imran Khan calls for meeting with PTI’s negotiation team ahead of Jan 28 talks

Canada Global (Web News) Imran Khan, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has called for a meeting with the party’s negotiation team ahead of the next round of talks with the government on January 28. Speaking to party leaders at Adiala Jail, he emphasized that PTI’s final stance on the dialogue process would be decided after the meeting.

PTI’s position on the negotiations has been unclear, with party chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan recently stating that talks were “on hold” despite earlier announcements of calling them off. The party initially withdrew from the talks, citing the government’s delay in forming a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 riots and the November 26 crackdown.

So far, three rounds of talks have taken place, but a deadlock persists, with PTI demanding the commission’s formation before proceeding further, while the government has promised a written response in the next round.

PTI Senator Shibli Faraz reiterated the party’s demand for an impartial probe and criticized the government’s shifting stance on timelines. He stressed the need for political stability and reaffirmed PTI’s willingness to continue discussions if the commission is established.

Taliban deputy foreign minister urges reopening of girls’ high schools

Canada Global (Web News) Taliban’s acting deputy foreign minister, Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai, has urged the group’s leadership to reopen schools for Afghan girls, calling the ongoing restrictions unjust and contrary to Islamic teachings.

Speaking over the weekend, Stanekzai emphasized that education was accessible to both men and women during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He argued that denying education to Afghanistan’s female population, nearly half of the country’s 40 million people, was a significant injustice.

His remarks mark one of the strongest public criticisms from within the Taliban regarding the school closures, which were reportedly enforced by the group’s supreme leader, Haibatullah Akhundzada, despite internal disagreements.

The Taliban initially promised to reopen girls’ high schools in 2022 but later reversed their decision and also barred women from universities by the year’s end. They claim to uphold women’s rights under Islamic law and Afghan traditions but have provided no timeline for reopening educational institutions for females.

International criticism has been widespread, with Islamic scholars and Western diplomats stating that the Taliban’s stance on women’s education remains a major obstacle to their recognition on the global stage.

Taliban officials in Kandahar, where Akhundzada is based, have not responded to Stanekzai’s remarks.
