In the Xi meeting, Biden seeks to establish a “floor” for US-China relations.

Canada Global (Web News) When he meets Xi Jinping next week, US President Joe Biden aims to establish principles for competing with China, but he will be open about US concerns, such as those about Taiwan and human rights, a senior administration source said.

The official told reporters in a call about the discussion that “the president believes it is necessary to set a floor for the relationship and ensure that there are rules of the road that bound our rivalry.”

The White House announced that Biden will speak with Xi, the president of China, on Monday outside of a summit of the Group of 20 countries in Indonesia. This will be their first in-person encounter since Biden took office as president in January 2021.

Relations between the US and China have been tense, particularly since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in August. Beijing claims Taiwan as its territory.

China, the second-largest economy in the world after the United States, is Washington’s principal geopolitical adversary. Despite difficulties over Taiwan, the South China Sea, trade, and a number of other issues, the United States wants to have stable relations with Beijing.

A meeting where no concrete agreements are anticipated won’t result in an unified statement, according to a senior administration official.

The official stated, “I anticipate the president will be open and honest about a number of our issues, including PRC (People’s Republic of China) action that imperils stability and peace across the Taiwan Strait, as well as our long-standing worries about human rights violations.

The person stated that North Korea and Russia’s conflict in Ukraine will certainly be mentioned.
