Canada Global(Web News)Virgin Atlantic in the UK has been given permission to fly the first transatlantic flight powered by 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
The United Kingdom’s Civil Aviation Authority has said that the organization has approved the flight from London’s Heathrow Airport to New York on November 28.
Made from sources such as waste and used cooking oil, the fuel can reduce carbon emissions by up to 70 percent compared to conventional jet fuel, but currently costs many times more to produce. At present this fuel can only be used in jet engines with 50% kerosene without further modification.
Before the agency approved Virgin Atlantic’s scheduled flight, it underwent a number of aspects, including ground testing with the engine running on 100 percent sustainable aviation fuel.
The agency’s chief executive, Rob Bishton, said Prouse’s approval not only validates Virgin Atlantic and others’ commitment to sustainable fuels, but also exemplifies the industry’s efforts to explore new technologies.
He said that innovation and sustainability are important places to work but they have to go hand in hand with safety.
