A Winter Blizzard Engulfs Cape Breton, Declaring A State Of Emergency

 Canada Global(Web News)The Cape Breton Regional Municipality has declared a local state of emergency as the area is hit by a winter storm that could bring up to 150cm of snow. The Cape Breton Victoria Regional Center for Education says The schools will be closed on Monday

CBRM Mayor Amanda McDougall said Sunday that after meeting with the provincial command center, she learned there would not be a provincial emergency.

An emergency meeting of the CBRM Council was then held and the vote for a seven-day state of local emergency was unanimous, he said.

MacDougall said a state of emergency gives municipalities the power to control or prohibit travel and provide assistance to those who qualify.

All Cape Breton Victoria Regional Center for Education schools and workplaces will be closed Monday, according to a news release Sunday.

All schools and work sites at the Straits Regional Center for Education are also closed for Monday due to the weather. The Conseil scolaire acadien provincial, the province’s French school board, also closed its Cape Breton schools for Monday.

Motorists in Cape Breton have been asked to avoid non-essential travel.

Cape Breton Regional Municipality has winter parking restrictions in place while snow continues to fall.
