European police arrest more than 100 mafia suspects in broad crackdown

Canada Global (Web News) More than 100 people were detained by police in Europe on Wednesday as part of a crackdown that delivered a “serious blow” to the Italian ‘Ndrangheta mafia. Suspects were allegedly involved in the trafficking of drugs and firearms with Latin American equivalents.

“Today’s raids are one of the largest operations carried out so far in the fight against Italian organised crime,” said German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, adding that they had “dealt a serious blow to the ‘Ndrangheta.”

According to the EU law enforcement organisation Europol, the raid was a component of an investigation that involved Italy, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Spain, Slovenia, Romania, Brazil, and Panama.

The network was primarily focused on international drug trafficking from South America to both Europe and Australia, according to a statement from Europol.

Massimiliano D’Angelantonio, the head of the Italian police, claims that the network set up money transfers through Chinese money brokers in Italy and Colombia to pay for cocaine purchases.

In addition to smuggling cocaine from the PCC (Primeiro Comando da Capital), a criminal organisation in Brazil, the ‘Ndrangheta clans allegedly also smuggled weaponry from Pakistan to South America.

The Cosa Nostra has been eclipsed by the ‘Ndrangheta as the most potent mafia organisation in the nation and one of the biggest criminal organisations in the world. The ‘Ndrangheta has its origins in the southern Italian region of Calabria.

Pele, Brazil’s legendary footballer dies at 82

    Canada Global (Web News)

Brazilian football legend Pele, widely recognised as the best player of all time, passed away on Thursday at the age of 82, according to his family. Pele was a three-time World Cup champion and the architect of the “beautiful game.”

“We owe everything we have to you. You have our undying love. Enjoy your serenity, “Kely Nascimento said something on Instagram.

Pele is the only player in history to have won the World Cup three times (1958, 1962, and 1970), earning him the title of athlete of the century from the International Olympic Committee in 1999.

He had been fighting colon cancer and kidney issues, and the latter required surgery in September 2021 and subsequent treatment. His health had been deteriorating.

  • Brazil moves to the last 16 after a Casemiro strike.

Brazil moves to the last 16 after a Casemiro strike.

Canada Global (Web News) On Monday night, Brazilian supporters brought Latin American swagger to this region of Qatar, as Casemiro’s lone goal against Switzerland sent Brazil into the 2022 World Cup knockout rounds. Doha’s Stadium 974 vibrated to the rhythm of the samba.

The midfielder’s amazing 83rd-minute strike gave Brazil a victory with one game remaining and ignited a match that had previously struggled to get going.

But none of it will matter to the sea of Brazilian supporters, who forgot the previous 80 or so minutes of shoddy passing and aimless play in the hysteria of the final few seconds.

It was difficult to imagine that this match was being played in the Arabian Peninsula because it had all the characteristics of a Brazilian home game, including thundering roars greeting each spectacular move and a steady beat played throughout.

The soccer student may have thought otherwise, though, if the supporters had arranged a celebration. Both of these teams’ previous World Cup games had resulted in draws: 2-2 in 1950 and 1-1 in 2018.

In their nine meetings with Switzerland, the Brazilians have only won three, drawn four, and lost two.

Before Casemiro’s moment of absolute wizardry, this Monday night match appeared to be headed for another draw.

In an act of increasing desperation, Casemiro, who had come on at halftime, delivered a first-time ball to Rodrygo. Casemiro struck it with the outside of his foot and it slipped past Yann Sommer in goal, shocking the Swiss as it bulged the side of the inside of his goal.

Casemiro and Brazil owe a big debt of gratitude to Vinicius Jr. for the goal, even if Rodrygo delivered the assist. Brazil’s newest superstar had pulled three increasingly desperate defenders onto him, which opened up space for the goal.

The match could have finished 2-0 or 3-0, but it would have been unfair to the Europeans who, for the most part, blunted the Brazilians’ brutal moment of brilliance.
