Chemical spill forced evacuation of northeast Calgary business

Canada Global (Web News) Due to a chemical incident, twenty employees were required to leave a warehouse in Castleridge early on Monday.

Global News was informed by the Calgary fire department that the spill occurred just before 3:10 a.m.

A hydrogen peroxide bag was punctured by a forklift. After the tote struck the metal rack, a chemical reaction resulted in a gas cloud, according to the firefighters.

Three people were evaluated by EMS but not brought to the hospital as 20 workers departed the Day and Ross Freight warehouse on Westwinds Drive NE.

The hydrogen peroxide was diluted using a hose line by the fire department’s hazmat squad in order to clear the gas cloud.

Crews began monitoring the air in the facility to make sure it was safe once it was evacuated.
