Canada Global(Web News)Wards Island Association’s clubhouse was burnt to ashes due to fire.
The clubhouse, which also houses the Island Cafe, was fully engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived on the scene shortly before 2:30 a.m. Sunday. Even after the fire was brought under control, the clubhouse structure continued to burn. Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg said fire crews will remain on the island until heavy equipment arrives to investigate the cause of the fire. No injuries have been reported in the meantime.
Local residents said the clubhouse was built between 1937 and 1938 and holds many memories. Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow also expressed grief over the incident.
