Canada Global(Web News)The southwestern Ontario city of London will be in the spotlight on Monday when a high-profile investigation into allegations of sexual abuse against players on Canada’s 2018 world junior hockey team begins in court.
Five players — Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, Alex Formenton, Carter Hart and Michael McLeod — were charged late last month with sexual assault that allegedly occurred in June 2018 in the city. Court documents show McLeod faces an additional charge.The
players’ attorneys have said their clients will defend themselves against the charges and all five are expected to plead not guilty.
The case is set to make its first appearance in a London court on Monday morning,
said Katrina Scott, academic director of Western University’s Center for Research and Education on Violence Against Women and Children. It can spark important conversations about consent and whether or not it exists in sports culture,
she said, adding that the issue is particularly salient when sports organizations deal with allegations of sexual abuse. Scrutiny has been faced.
