Canada Global (Web News) U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a new energy council to address the nation’s increasing electricity demands, aiming to bolster America’s position in its artificial intelligence competition with China.
“We’re going to achieve energy dominance like never before, and that doesn’t even account for the massive electricity output we’ll need for AI facilities,” Trump stated while signing the executive order.
“They require at least double the power we currently have,” he added.
Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, who attended the signing, emphasized the urgency of the initiative, stating, “The U.S. is in an AI race against China, and securing more electricity is the key to winning.”
According to the White House, the newly formed council will oversee energy policy across federal agencies, ensuring a more efficient approach to permitting, production, and distribution of energy resources.
This initiative aligns with Trump’s campaign pledge to expand domestic energy production, prioritizing oil and gas development while rolling back concerns from the previous administration regarding carbon emissions and climate impact.
Additionally, the move aims to mitigate potential cost surges from Trump’s trade policies, which could drive up energy prices due to tariffs on imports and exports.
The AI sector’s demand for electricity is growing rapidly, with data centers already straining the country’s existing power infrastructure.
Years of underinvestment have left the U.S. power grid vulnerable, further impacted by the decommissioning of aging nuclear plants.
Leading technology executives have been pressuring the administration to prioritize energy expansion to meet AI industry requirements.
