Canada Global(Web News)The City of Kelowna says half a dozen boats that sank during January’s cold snap have been removed from Okanagan Lake.
The evacuation began late last month, nearly two weeks after the polar vortex froze the region, with temperatures dropping to 30C in some places.
In an effort to prevent environmental impacts on the lake and threats to the community, six sunken boats were recovered from Manhattan Point, several nearby at-risk boats were moved to a secure storage area and several others were removed by their owners.
The city noted that some boats pulled from the lake were illegally docked and is now working to strengthen bylaws to prevent further deployment of illegal buoys.
Any unclaimed boats will be disposed of 60 days from now, or by April 10, the city says.
