Canada Global(Web News)Experts say a new program launched by Alberta to recruit skilled trade workers should focus on recruiting workers across the country. But Premier Doug Ford says he has nothing to worry about if people from his province go there.
Alberta currently offers a $5,000 tax credit (one time) to skilled trades workers from Ontario and other parts of the country. Alberta’s $10 million program aims to invite 2,000 people. Tricia Williams, director of research at the Future Skills Center, said the incentives and credits are focused on expanding existing workers’ horizons. He said Alberta is moving forward with the notion that skilled workers coming to them from other provinces and territories will need all the support they can get after the exchange.
Meanwhile, when asked if Alberta is taking an incentive-based approach to attract skilled workers and if Ontario is considering a similar move, Ford said that as far as health care is concerned, As far as workers are concerned, we are doing it. We are providing these facilities for their education, their books as well as police officers. Ford said he is not concerned if people from his province go to Alberta.
He added that he loves the people of Alberta, but there is no other place in the world like Ontario. People themselves want to come and settle here. Not only people from Ontario but also people from outside talk about coming and living here. It should be noted here that Ontario currently has a labor shortage, with 300,000 vacancies across the province, most of which are in skilled trades.
