Canada Global (Web News) The latest fatality in months of violence between Israelis and Palestinians occurred early on Thursday during an Israeli military raid in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.
Military claimed that soldiers operating in the Qalandiya refugee camp were being hit by rocks and cement blocks from rooftops above and replied with live fire. The military has been conducting nightly raids in the area since early last year. The 41-year-old Samir Aslan was the victim, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.
His passing occurred the day after two Palestinians died in separate West Bank incidents on Wednesday: one died during an Israeli military arrest operation in the territory’s north, while the other died after stabbing and injuring an Israeli in a settlement in the south.
The operations started in the spring of last year, following a string of deadly Palestinian attacks against Israelis. According to Israel, they are intended to destroy extremist networks and prevent such attacks. The Israeli occupation of the territory the Palestinians want for their future state has lasted 55 years and is still going strong in their eyes.
The West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and east Jerusalem were all taken by Israel during the Middle East War of 1967; these are the areas that the Palestinians want for their future independent state. Since then, Israel has built 500,000 homes over 130 settlements in the West Bank, which the Palestinians and a large portion of the international community see as a barrier to peace.
