Canada Global(Web News) Immigration Minister Mark Miller says that for the first time the Canadian government will set goals for temporary residents coming to the country.
Miller said this is being done to ensure sustainable growth in the number of temporary residents coming to Canada.
“Beginning this fall, for the first time, we will expand immigration levels to include both temporary resident arrivals and permanent resident arrivals,” Miller said in a press conference Thursday.
Miller said Canada was home to 2.5 million temporary residents by 2023, which is 6.2 percent of Canada’s entire population. In the next three years, the government plans to bring this rate up to five percent. He said he
will convene a meeting with his provincial and territorial counterparts as well as other relevant ministers in early May to set the targets.
“There are strong pathways to permanent residency for those who want to make Canada their long-term home and avoid the disadvantages of an economy built solely on temporary workers,” he said
