Canada Global (Web News) The Girl Guides of Canada have changed the name of their Brownies division to “Embers.”
According to the organisation, the previous name discouraged some racialized girls and women from participating in the outdoor adventure and activity group. The new name is intended to be more welcoming and inclusive.
In an online referendum, present and former members preferred “Embers” to “Comets,” according to CEO Jill Zelmanovits.
She says the new name is effective immediately for the Girl Guide branch for children aged seven and eight, but it will take several months to update various websites, marketing materials, and resources.
According to Zelmanovits, the name will be fully adopted by September 1.
