General Motors Cancels Shifts At Its Oshawa Plant Through Monday

Canada Global(Web News)General Motors has canceled shifts at its Oshawa plant through Monday, the union representing assembly plant workers confirmed. Unifor, which represents about 3,000 employees at the Oshawa facility, said the issue is related to a shortage of transmission parts.

General Motors has informed the union that shifts at its Oshawa assembly plant have been canceled for the rest of the week due to a transmission shortage from Toledo, Unifor said in a statement. The company said in a statement that production was temporarily affected by the shortage. It said it was working to resolve the issue and return to normal operations.

The decision to cancel the shifts comes in light of the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Ontario’s auto manufacturing industry. Last week, GM announced plans to hire an unspecified number of temporary workers at its Fort Wayne, Indiana, assembly plant to boost production amid U.S. tariffs on imported vehicles. The GM facility in Fort Wayne produces the GMC Sierra truck and the Chevrolet Silverado, the only vehicle currently produced at the Oshawa assembly plant-
