A laboratory official said that the genome sequence of the virus found in the samples collected from Peshawar and Hub showed that it originated from Afghanistan, but the genome sequence of the sample from Lahore is yet to be completed. .
He further said that the sewage samples collected from an area is an important parameter to determine the success of a polio campaign.
The presence of the virus in the wastewater also indicates that children in the area have compromised immune systems and are at risk of contracting a disease that can lead to permanent disability.
Caretaker Health Minister Dr. Nadeem Jan, expressing concern over the presence of the virus in environmental samples, has ordered all possible efforts to protect children from the disabling disease.
It should be noted that last month also in Balochistan province, for the first time since April 2021, polio virus was confirmed in the sewage samples of Pishin district, apart from this, polio virus was also found in the sewage of Peshawar city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
