Philip led the alliance for nearly 40 years and retired in 2020 but remains the organization’s honorary president.
On the group’s website, Philip is described as a passionate man and someone who “is characterized by fighting for the rights of the underprivileged, to ensure that justice prevails at all times and everywhere.”
Philip was known for advocating the rights of the black community and often spoke out against racism and discrimination.
“He never stopped fighting, he was always there,” current president Max Stanley Bazon said.
According to Marvin Rotrand, former Montreal city councilor and interim director of United Against Hate Canada, his work led to the desegregation of Montreal’s taxi industry.
