Cbc’s Decision To Lay Off 600 Employees

Canada Global(Web News)Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and Radio Canada have decided to lay off 600 employees. In addition, another 200 positions will not be filled because the company has a $125 million budget shortfall.

The public broadcaster said Monday that 250 employees will be laid off by both the CBC and Radio-Canada. The distribution will be done through corporate divisions such as technology and infrastructure. Some reductions will be effective immediately and others will be effective over the next 12 months. The existing 200 posts will be abolished.

These cuts are being made for reasons that affect all media companies. The CBC said the cuts were due to rising production costs, declining television advertising revenue and competition from major tech companies.

Catherine Tate, president and chief executive of CBC/Radio-Canada, said the corporation’s parliamentary funding is also likely to be cut starting next fiscal year. Now we are also stuck on our hands and we have no choice but to make cuts.
