Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg said it appeared there was a large explosion. Officials said only one person was in the house at the time of the blast, but he has been missing ever since.
Pegg said the situation is under control. We are currently working with Toronto Hydro, Enbridge Gas and the police to determine next steps. Once it is safe to do so, we will search the wreckage to see if there are any human remains buried there. He said that there was no report of injury to any other person and neither the explosion or fire caused any damage to the nearby houses.
The firefighter was taken to the hospital as a precaution after suffering minor injuries, and the cause of the explosion and fire is also being investigated.
