Calgary City Council Voted Against Advocacy To Close A Safe-Use Site In The City

Canada Global(Web News)Calgary City Council has voted not to ask the province to decide on a supervised drug consumption site at the Sheldon M. Chumer Health Centre.

Council voted 9-5 to defeat the motion with Mayor Jyoti Gondek voting not to write a letter to the Alberta government in support of closing the site.
It is not our jurisdiction,” Gondek said. “We were forced to do something and I hope it will not happen again.
Just because a minister asks us to take a decision that is not ours to take, that doesn’t mean we need to bring a notice of motion to do it.An
original motion put forward by Coun. McLean was replaced by another asking the mayor to write a letter in which The province will be asked to make a decision about the site.
McLean’s motion would have asked the Alberta government to close the site, claiming it was a crime and
nuisance It also cited the province’s move toward the Alberta Recovery Model, which takes a so-called recovery-oriented approach.

Residents opposed to the site’s closure gathered Tuesday morning for a rally to protest its possible closure.
