According to the report, flour millers fear that the ban on import of wheat at the ports will increase the prices of various types of flour, due to the increase in the cost of transporting the grain to flour mills in Karachi and other countries.
Millers said that the traffic department of Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has sent a letter to the stakeholders, customs agents and terminal operators on October 12 regarding the implementation of Excel Load Regime at Karachi Port.
he letter said that National Highway and Motorway Police (NHMP) held a meeting with transporters associations chaired by Chairman KPT to install weighing machines and enforce weight limits.
The meeting concluded that as per Highway Safety Ordinance (NHSO-2000), a fixed weight limit shall be imposed on weighing machines installed at all ports, for reference and implementation. A copy detailing the acceptable limits shall also be provided.
KPT’s letter states that trucks loaded beyond the axle capacity while leaving the port premises will be considered a violation of National Highway Authority regulations and such trucks will no longer be allowed.
Chairman Local Goods Transport Association Port Qasim Deen Muhammad said that the port authorities have limited the weight of wheat delivery which may cause food crisis.
“I am unable to understand why ports have been activated to reduce load instead of NHMP,” he said. 30 trucks are stranded at Port Qasim and 35 to 40 at Karachi Port.
He said that till now there is no such order for export cargo and only wheat and iron related goods are facing this kind of crisis. Will decide.
