Canada Global(Web News) The US space agency has released 2.3 million dollars to scientists to study the cultivation of lunar soil.
According to the researchers, their goal is to advance research on growing plants in lunar soil under the Thrive in Deep Space (TIDES) program. The ultimate goal of the program is long-duration spaceflight, NASA said in a statement. Missions are to enable and improve life on Earth.
The statement added that research based on space biology will enable studies of environmental effects on model organisms in spaceflight and will also provide important information that will enable better space exploration.
The projects will look at how lunar soil can be used to grow crops (grains, tomatoes and potatoes), NASA said. It will also seek to understand how growth in lunar soil may affect plant and microbial interactions and, in turn, how these interactions may affect plant growth and health.
