Canada Global (Web News) A new study has found that a heart-healthy diet can prevent memory loss in old age.
The Dietary Approaches to Prevent High Blood Pressure (DASH: DASH) diet is low in salt, low in sugar, and low in red meat (such as beef). But this diet is based on fruits, vegetables, beans and nuts, low-fat milk and pulses. The research studied 5,000 middle-aged women. In the study, the women’s diets were given a score indicating how close their diet was to the DASH diet.

After about 30 years, the women were asked about six types of everyday mental problems, including difficulty remembering shopping lists or recent events. If one of them mentioned at least two, her mental ability was judged to be impaired. The study found that women who ate heart-healthy foods (closer to the DASH guidelines) had I was 17 percent less likely to develop dementia.

Experts believe that diets such as DASH foods, which are good for the heart, cholesterol and blood pressure, also keep the brain healthy. Professor Yu Chen, senior author of the study from the New York University Grossman School of Medicine in the US, said the results were telling. They said that reducing salt, sugar and fat to lower blood pressure can help protect against Alzheimer’s disease.
