The route is usually closed to vehicular traffic for 8 months from November to June as temperatures drop below zero and traffic is diverted to the Karakoram Highway.
Deputy Commissioner Arif Ahmed said it depends on the weather, after heavy snowfall in November or when the frost is very severe, the route is closed.
The closure of Babusar Pass comes after dozens of travelers, including tourists, were stranded in the area following the recent snowfall.
The stranded tourists were rescued and shifted to Chilas city of Diamer Division of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Temperatures on Babusar Top usually drop below minus 15 degrees at night and severe winters make it difficult for police to patrol.
Other reasons for the prolonged closure of this route are the lack of security and slippery roads from Babusar Top to Naran on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa side.
Diamar to Mansehra is covered in 7 hours via Babusar Pass, the same distance via Karakoram Highway in 14 hours.
Tourists visiting Gilgit-Baltistan prefer to travel through Babusar Pass to enjoy the weather and breathtaking views.
