Protests against a federal carbon tax erupted across the country on Monday as Canada’s only Liberal provincial leader called an emergency meeting to discuss alternative ways to reduce emissions.
In a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Fury called for an emergency meeting of leaders from across Canada.
Dozens of people protested against the carbon tax outside the NL legislature, while the opposition called for bolder infrastructure investments by the federal government and incentives similar to the US Inflation Reduction Act to entice consumers to change their habits.
It should be noted that the carbon tax policy has come under intense scrutiny in the past several weeks. The premiers of seven provinces called on the federal government to end the program altogether or freeze the increase.
