Hundreds Of Fish Die In Quebec, Environmentalists Want To Know Why

Canada Global(Web News)Environmental experts and the federal government are trying to find out why hundreds of fish died in a section of the St. Lawrence River near Montreal.

La Vigile Verte, a local organization, says water levels in the La Prairie Basin between Montreal and Broussard suddenly dropped to their lowest level in decades, killing countless marine animals. A few weeks ago, Vigile Verte director Gina Filley was walking along the shores of the St. Lawrence looking for trash to pick up when she had the horrifying realization that she was stepping on hundreds of dead fish.
Dr. Philippe Bliss, a biologist and founder of Vigile Verte, called the situation “absolutely extraordinary.”

He said many fish were caught out of the water, both in the La Prairie Basin and other nearby bodies of water
. It is believed that waste and lack of oxygen may also be the cause of their death.
Environmentalists hope that Fisheries and Oceans Canada will conduct a meaningful investigation into the matter so that it can be prevented in the future.
