WestJet said in an email that Flight 710 diverted to the Manitoba capital after the incident on Friday.
The airline says the passenger was detained as per standard protocol.
RCMP say an 18-year-old man from Victoria, BC has been charged under the Aeronautics Act with endangering an aircraft.
Police say he has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Winnipeg on May 23.
WestJet said in its email that it is important to note that it is not possible to open the doors of a safe pressurized aircraft at altitude, adding that the flight was able to continue to Toronto shortly after the stop.
