7.1 magnitude earthquake strikes remote Tibet in Western China, killing dozens

According to Chinese state media, a 7.1-magnitude earthquake claimed at least 93 lives and was felt in neighboring Nepal.

Canada Global (Web News) A devastating 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck near one of Tibet’s sacred cities along the Himalayan border with Nepal on Tuesday, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The tremor, which occurred shortly after 9 a.m. at a depth of 6.2 miles in Dingri County, was felt as far as Nepal.

Chinese state media reported that the disaster claimed at least 95 lives, injured 130 people, and left significant destruction in its wake. Footage released by Xinhua, China’s official news agency, showed emergency responders clearing debris and searching for survivors.

The earthquake caused extensive damage in Dingri County, located on the northern slopes of Mount Everest, with over 1,000 homes reported to have collapsed, according to China’s state broadcaster.

The region experienced multiple aftershocks, with tremors also reported in Nepal. The United States Geological Survey recorded the earthquake’s magnitude as 7.1, while the China Earthquake Networks Center assessed it at 6.8.
